Talking with Jillian Michaels

By April 26, 2012 22 Comments

I had a great time appearing on Jillian Michaels’ new show a few weeks ago. I’m not saying that to be gracious or polite. I really mean it – I had so much fun!

She made it possible for us to have such a funny, honest, and engaging in the conversation.

You’ll see how she cracks me up, how I make her cry…and we talk about what I’ve learned about the inner critic and what helps us quiet its voice.

Watch the video clip here (if you are reading over email, click here for the clip):

Love,

Tara

  • maryjoe says:

i’m at the edge of my comfort zone and hearing my inner critic really loud right now. thanks for helping me name this critic and see it for what it is! i named her, my inner critic, “Dishonorable Judge” . thank you Tara , you’re work is so helpful!

  • Tara, you are a dynamic force and so natural holding your space with someone are strong as Jillian. I love you both and it’s fabulous to see you two interacting and helping all of us understand how universal this issue is.

    Rock on!

  • Cindy says:

That was awesome! You rock, Tara!

  • beautiful chemistry!!!

  • Carmen Gonzales says:

    I loved it! I got it 🙂

  • Joan says:

Note to Jillian: LOVE your videos. Wish you could train me personally! I have played by the rules my whole life and have SUCH ADMIRATION for those who follow their own hearts BEFORE they follow someone else’s rules! Your inner critic is blabbering about something I would love to be able to do so tell her THAT.

  • Janie says:

Wow! Loved this interview. I have a son that went through OCD therapy and it is sort of what the therapist taught him… He has to talk back to his OCD MONSTER (as he calls it) and in reality it is “Facing his fear”. Telling the OCD MONSTER that he doesn’t need to listen to his stuff and he will make up his own mind… and “what is the worse thing that can happen” WOW… you put this so clearly (again) for me… Thanks!!

  • Dorothy says:

Brilliant. Thank you so much for your work. Really interesting that my Diss Daisy reminded me of my disappointed mother too, even though my mother was a wonderful caring person.

  • Michael Ann says:

What a great interview! You are so poised and confident, and I agree with the comment above, it was really neat to see Jillian have her “a ha” moment. Love the advice!

  • Anna says:

What a great, engaging interview. Loved Jillian and think you both did such an awesome job putting it together for the audience.
Cant wait for the follow up!

  • Cydney says:

Tara – What a powerful interview. Great job. Love the naming of the inner critic. I am going to try this.

  • Ali says:

Great interview! There was a genuine chemistry there! The information is so valuable! I’m taking the information with me!

  • Perfect timing!

I needed the reminder – the visual of the distracting driver next to me – because I’ve been being distracted by THE SUPPRESSOR!

Thank you SO much for sharing.

  • Gina says:

Wonderful interview and the exercise has literally set me free! I too have been doing what Im doing for many many years and do not have the “correct” college degrees. My critic in this case is my “little worrier”. Perhaps the fact that I have worked with so many people for almost 30 years I can actually ask her to see she has battled those questions and may now want to become more of my little warrior. Just looking at this “part” of myself has opened up great possibilities! Mahalo Tara you are absolutely amazing! Big love to Jillian too for her openness and her warrior self for bucking the system and doing what she is here to do!

  • Paula says:

Fabulous interview — what great energy with you and Jillian on screen together! I think I’m going to watch this a couple times a week to imprint this deeper — thanks to you both!

  • I haven’t named my inner critic but I plan to think on that one because I definitely think she needs to be named so we can have this conversation. I love this approach and I am hoping this will help me on those days when my fears are on turbo boost. And I love the driving visual…that helped a lot.

Superb! I LOVE the way Tara presents this brilliantly simple yet so powerful practice. Decades ago (I’m 67), I dubbed my Inner Critic Mother Superior Mary Catharine of Sour Snippy Sabotage, and even drew her portrait. She hushes up when acknowledged, most of the time. If she rails on, I thank her for her cautious concern for me, and offer her a hug; this ‘dissolves’ her as if she’s the Witch in the Wizard of Oz. Never knew how to share this technique with others, but Tara has nailed it with such finesse. Thanks for posting this clip. Now I CAN share the technique!

I kind of don’t know what to say…but as I watched and Jillian described her inner critic..it described mine. My inner critic sits beside me at work..checks over my work and makes me feel less than. Everyone in my office seems to think my work is great, organized and concise. But my inner critic and I know better. I too, did not go to college. So I feel inferior to those who have around me. I know I have the respect of my manager, but I feel like any moment, they will realize that I am not all that I may appear to be, that I will trip myself up in some way, shape or form. My inner critic has a love/hate relationship with me…I don’t like her much. I see her now, dressed in a Chanel suit, organized, sharp and intelligent. Her name is April and she and I are going to have a little chat. “Thank you April.. I hear what you have to say and I think I know where your heart is, however, I’ve been doing pretty okay so far and although you THINK you have my best interest at heart, I am going to proceed in my own way…with a little bit of fear maybe, but also with a bunch of hope and tenacity.”

  • Shirley says:

How awesome Tara! One. I didn’t know Jillian has a new show. Two. SOOOOO glad to see your work with her. I enjoyed your metaphors … especially of the guard at the gate of our comfort zone and how arguing with the guard isn’t a good idea. Cheers to more of us expanding into new dream territory. yahooo Tara!

  • Betsey says:

Oh wow, this was awesome — until Jillian named her inner critic “BETSY the BITCH”! It was slightly distracting for me, LOL.
I’m spelling it different than my name. And I’m coming up with a different name for mine. 😉

We are on a mission to help you realize your playing big dream.
